HP is expanding a notebook – laptop battery recall as the units could overheat and catch fire.
According to the HP website, today’s recall affects more than 100,000 batteries.
Computer models include HP, Compaq, HP ProBook, HP Envy, Compaq Presario, and HP Pavilion Notebook Computers which were sold between March 2013 and October 2016. The batteries were also sold as accessories or spares, or provided as replacements through HP Support.
With the batteries posing a fire and burn hazard, computer owners are being asked to recheck their computer batteries, even if they did so in the original June 14, 2016 battery recall of the components. If you have you have already received a replacement battery for your computer, you are not affected by this expanded recall.
Customers should stop using the affected batteries immediately. Customers may continue to use the computers, but they need to remove the battery and connect the notebook to external power until the battery is replaced.
How do you know if you are affected by the battery recall?
HP has two ways to find out if your computer is affected. For further details you need to go to the special HP website for the expanded recall. But basically you can:
- Download the HP Battery Program Validation Utility to check if the battery in your notebook computer is affected. Validation using the utility generally takes less than 30 seconds. The software requires.net 4.5 framework and HP CASL Framework (EXE, (8 MB)) to be installed in order for utility to function.or
- Enter the serial number of your laptop and battery to check if it’s been recalled. HP provides instructions on that page along with details as to where to locate both numbers depending on your laptop model.
Please note the company says that not ALL batteries in all HP, Compaq, HP ProBook, HP ENVY, Compaq Presario, and HP Pavilion Notebook Computers are affected.
